What are E-Cigarettes and Why Make the Switch?

E-cigarettes have made headlines around the world and by all accounts they’re not just another passing fad that’s here today and gone tomorrow. They’re here to stay.

Also known as e-cigs and electronic cigarettes, e-cigarettes are devices that emit nicotine in a vaporised form. Unlike tobacco cigarettes which rely on combustion, e-cigarettes work by heating liquid nicotine which is converted into a vapour that the user – a vaper – inhales to deliver nicotine to the lungs.

This makes them different from tobacco cigarettes which use combustion to burn the tobacco which then releases the nicotine, along with around 4,000 other chemicals, many of which cause cancer, heart disease and a myriad of other health problems.

Parts of an E-Cigarette

Although there are many models on the market, e-cigarettes generally have three main parts – a vaporisation chamber, a cartridge containing the liquidised nicotine (e-liquid) and a rechargeable lithium battery.

The battery powers the device and is connected to the vaporisation chamber which is connected to the cartridge containing the e-liquid. An atomiser, the component that produces vapour by heating the e-liquid, is enclosed in the vaporisation chamber.

How It Works

As mentioned above, e-cigarettes work by heating the e-liquid which is converted into a vapour that the vaper inhales to deliver nicotine to their lungs. The atomiser in the vaporisation chamber is activated when the vaper inhales on the device, which heats the e-liquid and is then inhaled through the mouthpiece and into the lungs.

The vapour is therefore inhaled in the same way that traditional tobacco cigarettes are inhaled by smokers, and the actions are very much the same – holding the e-cig with one hand, and inhaling and exhaling just as smokers do with tobacco cigarettes.

Who Invented the E-Cigarette?

Whilst the earliest electronic cigarette is attributed to an American inventor by the name of Herbert A. Gilbert, the e-cigarettes that we know today are attributed to the Chinese pharmacist and inventor, Hon Lik, who patented the e-cigarette in 2003.

But the modern e-cigarette also owes a debt of gratitude to other inventive people, like British entrepreneurs Tariq and Umer Sheikh, who are credited with inventing the cartomiser, which is a disposable e-liquid cartridge with an atomiser inside.

Why Make the Switch?

E-cigarettes have been increasing in popularity for some time now, and although it doesn’t seem like they’ll ever completely replace tobacco cigarettes, they have been welcomed by smokers the world over because they’re a great alternative.

  • Tobacco cigarettes emit more than 4,000 deadly chemicals when burned
  • E-cigs don’t release smoke, so there’s no secondhand smoke to worry about
  • E-cigs are much more affordable than tobacco cigarettes, saving you money
  • There are many delicious e-liquid flavours to try, including tobacco flavours
  • You can choose nicotine strength, so e-cigs can be used as cessation devices
  • There’s no smoke emitted so there’s no stinky cigarette smell everywhere!

Switching to e-cigarettes is a great choice for your health, the health of others and your finances. Why not make the switch to X2 Cigs e-cigarettes today?
